New Musicians made welcome
The Town of Belper had previously had a band called "Belper Town Band". This had been started in the period when the mills were still in operation from which they had great support. With the demise of the mills the bands fortune also changed, and although they battled on they eventually had to give in to the inevitable and disbanded in 1956. The band, which was originally named after the earlier band "Belper Town Band" found that after some time, the band was always being mistaken for a brass band; so to clarify the situation the word "Wind" was later added and resolved any confusion. The Band The band now comprises of 42+ members, including two Musical Directors with a diversified age range of eleven to eighty years. Likewise the ability level is varied, from relative beginners to several ex professionals. Everybody whatever their ability when they join the band will all agree that they have gained from the experience and learnt something. We are a closely knitted community band and enjoy rehearsing music every Tuesday night from 7pm at the Zion Methodist Church, Openwoodgate, Belper. Encouragement is offered to anyone who wishes to participate. We are now very proficient at what we do and regularly make public appearances in and around Derbyshire. We perform throughout the year in many varied places and under different conditions. We can be seen at local events such as carnivals, well dressings, fetes, garden parties, and bandstands in the park. On odd occasions streets and shopping centres. We have even supplied music for weddings and church services. We are proud to participate in all events in the future in the knowledge that we can appeal to a greater audience, so come along and support us and enjoy our music. The Belper Town Wind Band is an entirely self-financing organisation, balancing members' subscriptions and appearance fees with ongoing overheads such as the hire of rehearsal facilities, the cost of music, insurance premiums and uniforms. All players provide their own instruments and are responsible for their insurance and upkeep, usually at considerable personal cost.
